Fashioning My Cyber Microcosm: The Best Homework Ever.

As most of you know, it's time for yet another of Dr. Z's fun homework assignments.
This months assignment is probably my favorite to date, because she asked us "What's on your cutting table?"

Well, Dr. Z... surprisingly not a lot, heh. I like to finish a project that I start; sprinkle a little unwillingness-to-create-more-clutter-in-my-small-room into the mix and I have myself a cocktail of a pretty productive, and in constant use, sewing room. Still, some things do fall off the table, so to say... and for those projects, I commit this post to.

Last year, in Sept. I made a craft exchange deal with a friend. My side of the deal was to knit her a true to show Dr. Who scarf... little did I know what I was getting into....

Don't get me wrong, I am way more than happy to oblige a friend, especially when it's a craft exchange. I love making and receiving handmade things... but this thing is a monster!
It's 19 inches wide, and its finished length is 13 feet. It feels like it's endless sometimes, and I work on it an hour or two a day, and it's only about 6 1/2 feet so far. Phew! Though, I admit I am a pretty slow knitter (I average about 2 1/2 of these rows every 15 mins) and for some of November, and most of December there were stretches of days I didn't work on it at all.

Another thing I started in September was my first quilt.

In my defense, in the post where I showed it off in the link I did say there wasn't going to be a chance anytime soon to see this quilted. The shop still has a full quota, but the bats and webs will be worth the wait.

Yet another thing I started in Sept. (or was it earlier?) was something I really wanted to be a surprise, but now I am realizing that it's a cursed garment.

I kept saying I was going to finish it; the plan was to have it finished for Halloween, as I was intending to go as a gender swapped Beetlejuice from the 50's. Hair and everything was going to be fantastic... at least in my head it seemed like it was going to be fantastic. I even printed out a cover for one of my books to read as the Handbook For The Recently Deceased, where in a photoshoot I would handle the book with disgust.

I was in the middle of View A. It might still happen... if I can actually sit and work on this dress in peace. Something always comes up.

Finally, I started this early in the month.... I can't truthfully say I lost the steam to finish this project. More like, I realized I have too many other things I should be finishing, so I put this down.

What it is, is a series (4 total) of mixed media pieces I'm doing inspired by images of the Joann's bag I bought. Only, they're going to feature some (also borrowed) vintage hallowe'en images. I have only finished the line work, but my plan is to use watercolors, acrylics, and pencil crayon.

That's it, folks! Hopefully one day these unfinished projects see the finish line!
It's exciting to see all of the other projects people have on their tables.

  1. I love the colours in your quilt! My homework assignment was on my quilt as well. And the mixed media series sounds interesting too. :)

    1. I love your quilts, you have a talent for mixing the patterns and colors. =)

I get pangs of regret for even starting the series... it's something I reeeeally want to finish up, more than the dress!

  2. Ah, the "would you make me something?" "Sure!" "I want this humongous thing and it's going to take forever for you to make it, but hey, you love me enough, right?"-moment... Your quilt looks lovely, and I hope you'll have time to finish that Beetlejuice-dress. I can't wait to see it!

    1. Haha, most times that scenario would be the case... but I offered to make her the scarf because I know she's always been wanting one, and I wanted a crocheted death star for my husband. I didn't fathom the size until I begun, but by then my heart was committed to the effort.

Thank you! They'll get finished... eventually (I hope).

  3. The idea of the Beetlejuice dress is wonderful and so the ideas for the photoshoot! I hope you get it finished some day. :D I am repeating the previous commentators but that quilt is truly lovely, the colors are beautiful!

    1. I hope I will too, but something more important seems to come up every time I decide to sit down and finish it... my latest attempt ended quickly when realizing I gained weight, and my mock up no longer fit lol.

Thank you! I'm hoping that too will see a time when it's finished up lol

  4. I can imagine that the length of the scarf sucks up all of the motivation to work on it! But all of your projects look great, you will certainly finish the Beetlejuice dress on time... ;)

    1. That dress was supposed to be finished by last year's Halloween lol... I can only hope to have it finished by this Halloween now, heh.

It's tough to work on it somedays, I'll admit that... but I really want to make my friend's wish come true! She's really been wanting one, heh.

  5. I remember that quilt!! I have yet to do any quilting myself still, I haven't even cut out the squares lol. I'm working on my unfinished lolita inspired coat right now. It's funny, on one hand I wish I hadn't put it on hiatus because there's things I forgot about, on the other hand I'm a much better sewist now so I can tackle it with more knowledge lol. Sometimes it pays to put things off.

    1. I want to start another one, but I haven't decided on a pattern yet. A stack and whack looks like it might be fun... heh.
Egads! A lolita coat? I can't wait to see that!

  7. Whoa, 13 feet? You're a better woman than I am!

Love that quilt Absolutely love the colour combinations you've used. Maybe you'd like to gift that to someone who'd know exactly where to display it? Hmmmmm? ;)

    1. The size didn't register to me until working on it lol
I thought I could whip it up quick, seeing as it's only knit stitches... that kind of backfired lol. It is worth it, though-- she crocheted me the death star, AND made me a day of the dead scarf AND an amigurumi enterprise.

    2. Oh, and you can totally have it when it's done... I have so many blankets... and would like to do more quilting. Would be an awful shame to see this stowed away where no one will appreciate it. =)

    3. OMG, you dear girl! I was only kidding when I said that!! It's far too big and expensive of a project for you to just give away. Something of that quality deserves to go to a family member. But thank you so much for your offer - you're far too generous! :)

  8. Everyone is making quilts! Very jealous! I do not have space though!

    1. Quilts are fun, mostly easy, and very useful... that also make nice gifts!
Believe me, I may have a dedicated craft room, but because I have a trillion other hobbies aside sewing, it feels cramped in there! Lol.

  9. That Simplicity pattern is so immensely lovely. The mid to late 50s feel that its designs give off appeals to my vintage loving heart to no end. It is a classic, classy and very beautiful design.

Many thanks for your lovely blog comment this morning. I hope that you had a marvelous weekend, dear gal, and that February is already off to a great start for you.

  10. And this is exactly why, when Ed asked, begged and pleaded for a Dr. Who scarf, I said NO! NO! NO! UGH! You're a good friend, dear gal. A REALLY good friend. SQUEE! I really like the quilt. I can't wait to see it done.

Sheeze, you always have such cool things going on in your sewing/crafting room! Oh yeah, some of those Retro Patterns are a real pain in the ass. Beware of Butterick. Seriously.

    1. Hehe, it's no wonder! I don't think I will commit to another Dr. Who scarf after I finish this one... and if I do, I either really love the person, or I've gone off my rocker, hehe.

Don't I know it! They need a lot of redrafting work... but boy, when you get it juuust right-- it's truly a gem and worth the extra effort!
